But What Do YOU Eat? Typical Breakfast Choices

February 5, 2014

What do you eat?

That is always the question when people learn that I am a dietitian. Everything about food has become complicated in our generation. We are bombarded with food media and marketing- new products, so called “good foods” and “bad foods”…. It all becomes confusing.

The answer is simple: I eat food. I try to make sure that it rarely comes in a package and has recognizable ingredients. Beyond that, I don’t try to overthink it. I eat what I am hungry for and try to make good choices.

Confused again?

Here are some breakfast items from the past month or so.

If I have time–I like to cook 2 eggs with veggies and fruit. If I’m really short on time, I will slather a banana in peanut butter and call it breakfast. I don’t have any toast or waffle photos here….but I also eat that. I buy whole grains and use real butter. My oatmeal photo shows dates, nuts, coconut. I love putting fruits and nuts of any kind on hot cereal. Usually 2-4 tbs nuts and 1 c fruit. I’ve been eating this way for so long that it is automatic for me. It also takes less time than hitting a drive thru.

I enjoy green smoothies- but not every day. It’s freezing here and cold drinks don’t always hit the spot. I don’t own protein powder, but I do buy chia seeds, peanut butter, almond butter, and whole milk. I gave up on lite/fat free products a long time ago. They feel fake to me.

I’m not as small as I was in my 20’s and 30’s when I had hours to do cardio and no one else to cook for–but that is ok! On most days my size fours are loose. When they aren’t….I know it’s time to cut back a bit.

Right now, I’m thinking about spring and summer and making an effort to eat lighter. Let me know if anyone is up for another 10 week series on healthful eating!

My breakfasts are super boring. Either Oatmeal with fruits or Green smoothies. I’m too lazy to cook eggs! Though I really love eggs on avocados (that’s for supper lol)

Those are both great choices! When I worked, I ate oatmeal every day. Now that I’m at home, I have more time to cook
