One Awesome Summer- Rainy Day Fun
We had a very busy week!
It’s been raining like crazy here. We filled our time with swim lessons, cooking, and brushing up on our reading skills. At the end of the week, we took a few road trips to hang out with friends and celebrate the fourth of July.
Staying at home with two active kids can be a tough job when the weather is bad. I know that there are a lot of great indoor activities that you can do–but we were forced to stay at home while we had more work done on the house. I’ve mentioned before that our house was not completely finished when we moved in a few months ago? We are still tying up a few last details and that forced us indoors for three days this week.
To pass the time, we joined www.starfall.com
Star Fall teaches children from pre school through second grade basic reading skills and phonics. The website has great interactive games and modules to help young readers develop a solid reading foundation. We happily discovered math games on the site as well. Leighton enjoys the interactive ABC’s that introduce phonetic sounds and work with letter recognition. Morgan is enjoying word problems, counting, and reading. Full access to the site costs $35 for an entire year. I call it a bargain!
As promised, the kids were in the kitchen quite a bit this week.
We made chicken spaghetti courtesy of a recipe from The Pioneer Woman. I love her style! She nails it for comforting and family friendly dishes. I have often said that letting your kids help out in the kitchen greatly increases the likelihood that they will eat what you prepare. My two are learning to peel veggies, stir in ingredients, and make simple dishes like sandwiches or smoothies “almost” on their own. I see a great improvement in their eating!
We celebrated the 4th of July with family on a beautiful lake nearby and it was perfect!
Another great rainy day activity? Building a fort in the basement with the pillows from our lawn furniture. It’s been too wet to leave them outside. The kids pile them up and jump in them 🙂
Have a great week!
