Back on the Market

We are finally listed to sell the house again! The blogging silence was due to lots of cleaning and staging.

I’m learning a few things about keeping the home ready to view at all times with two small children.

  1. The realtors will always call while you are in the shower. Then you have approximately 20 minutes to dress yourself and two kids while simultaneously cleaning the house.
  2. If you have a five-year old…always do a walk through and flush every single toilet in the house. You never know.
  3. The day you do not vacuum is the day that they will call.
  4. Someone will always burst into tears (or demand to use the potty for 19 minutes) and slow you down while you are in a mad dash to clear clutter. Handling this one is tricky. 5 minutes wasted can mean the difference between a juice splattered counter top and a happy kid.
  5. Bottom line. Get up. Get dressed. Get out of there. Best way to avoid the mess is “No be there”.

Yesterday, we were in the midst of getting ready to take the kids to a birthday party that started at 11am. The realtor called at ten and wanted to view the home at 10:30. It was good to have half an hour, but in the end I left the garage with my dish drainer and a full basket of laundry in the back of the car. We always keep the garage closed because really…what is more embarrassing than getting busted loading a week’s worth of dirty clothes into the back of your SUV while vacating the house for show?!

Thanks again to my friends who suggested buying several clothes baskets and then sweeping all of the clutter into them and loading them in the car. It is a fast way to get out when you need to hurry. We also learned that you can fill your washing machine with clothes off the floor and close the lid. The downside is that you must then wash, dry, and put away the clothes so that you can repeat the process the next day. It’s no fun when you realize that you have loaded up all available…ahem…storage space. Yes, people- I hate laundry. More specifically the folding and putting away part. Bleh!

We really do not want to be renting this place while living 2,000 miles away.

    Jen — Just saw online that there is an Associate Dean’s position open at UTEP — wonder if there is any way to get connected with the university with faculty getting hired as potential buyers? Just a thought — your lovely home might be out of their price range….but you never know….

    Wishing you all the best at selling your place. Sounds as if you have the routine down pat!

      Laura–we have a great realtor who handles relocation for some of the faculty. The professors are our target market. We have several living on our street 🙂
