NaBloPoMo 2011- Holiday Survival

November 17, 2011

It’s ben a while since Ive done a cooking post.

My in laws are here and I have been scrambling to keep up with everything. Dinners have been a mix of J’s favorites–his mom is an awesome cook!–and quick and easy things that we can use to feed a crowd.

I’m hosting a Thanksgiving Feast for close to 30 next week and I feel woefully behind in preparing for it 🙂

Today, I would like to talk about Holiday Survival in the Kitchen. I find that having key ingredients on hand helps make this time a bit less stressful while cooking.

Things you Need:

Flour

Salt

Sugar

Brown Sugar

Baking Powder

Baking Soda

Eggs

Milk

Half and Half

Whipping Cream

Real Butter (It is a holiday!)

Sour Cream

Chicken Stock  and or Vegetable Stock (I buy it by the quart and hoard it)

Cranberries–fresh can be frozen, canned can keep forever 🙂

Pie Crusts or Puff Pastry

Onions

Green Onions–These can be chopped and frozen in empty water bottles ahead of time. Just shake them out when you need them! Thanks Pinterest for a fantastic idea!!

Parsley

Rosemary

Vanilla Extract

Cinnamon

Pumpkin Pie Spice

Nutmeg

Ginger

Poultry Seasoning

Garlic

Boxed Cornbread mixes for stuffing

Obviously there is much more to it–but this is the first wave of ensuring that I am not screaming my head off on the big day going “Where is the ________????”

I’m working on the whole menu. I will try to have it up tomorrow!

What are your holiday must haves??
