Green Smoothie Tools

November 13, 2008

“Sunday Drive” around the pool

Some of you have asked about how I prepare the smoothies.

I have a basic blender by Waring–pictured in my previous post–that was a gift from our wedding. It can handle lettuce, celery, fresh and frozen fruit–but I don’t know that I would try something hard like a carrot. It helps to put your watery fruits into the blender first and then add veggies once you have a smooth liquid puree as a base. You can always add cold water to the smoothie to thin it out and to help your blender along. My spinach smoothie with mango and banana was so thick that Morgan and I ate it with a spoon.

I don’t think you need special tools unless you get very serious about juicing for meals, which I am not. This is just my way of skipping the afternoon candy bar that has become all too common.

They taste WAAAY better cold–so using frozen fruit or adding ice helps with the taste. I also keep mine in a stainless steel lunch jar while drinking it. It has a screw on cap so that I can make one the night before and transport it to work.

My energy levels have been great. I’ve probaby said before that I am a huge skeptic…but I am impressed by how great I feel getting these 5+ extra servings of fruits and veggies each day. My hands and feet have always been swollen at the end of the day–curse of genetics–but this seems to help. My skin looks smooth and clearer–and I am getting by on less than 1/2 of the caffeine that I normally take in.

I’m using these as an afternoon snack and find that my appetite at dinner is very small. I didn’t weigh this week so I cannot tell if there has been any effect on that…but I might weigh on Sunday and try another week of the smoothies to see.

Today, I drank a “bunny spice” smoothie recipe that I found on happyfoody.com
It had carrots, almond milk, a banana and ginger/spices. I loved it! It’s been my favorite so far.
Since I could not juice a carrot in my blender–I purchased organic carrot juice at my grocery store and used plain almond milk, but added vanilla and sweetener.

I think this was Morgan’s favorite as well. He would buzz happily around the room and each time he passed by where I was sitting he would take a big drink from my cup. This smoothie was very rich in vitamin A, Beta Carotene, and Vitamin E from the Almond milk. Another great drink for beautiful skin and a healthy immune system.

Oh–I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted new photos. Jeremy’s folks will be here
this week and I promise I will try to do better with the camera. Our little guy has been a drooling teething mess and does not care to work it for the photographers right now 🙂

You’re honestly inspiring me. I’m probably only one more positive review post away from making a veggie smoothie. Keep ’em coming. I hear ya on the afternoon candy bar, except mine was even worse: a nighttime candy bar. It’s been a few weeks and I’m slowly dying inside. I miss my garbage snack!

You are inspiring me too. I think I am going to have to try this. I have to try something- I am out of control. I ate left over Halloween candy at 11 last night. Yikes! On a totally unrelated note, I got your gift today. Thank you so much!

Ok, I’m sold. Seriously, I’m really thinking about making a go of this. I need to do SOMETHING drastic before I have to see family at the holidays and they all realize I haven’t shed a single pound of baby weight in the past 4 months! And this doesn’t sound so bad…MUCH healthier than the up-the-caffiene-to-cut-the-appetite strategy I usually go with!
